Why I Have A Daily Routine (And You Should Too!)

The other day I was thinking to myself how ironic it was that I love big changes, but I can’t stand when something in my daily routine gets interrupted. Perhaps that implies I’m inflexible or a control freak, but I’d like to think it’s because I have a good portion of my life figured out. My routine depends on the day, but it stays consistent from week to week. For instance, my Monday, Wednesday, Friday routine is different from my Tuesday, Thursday routine, but that’s just because I schedule my life around college.

Let’s take a look at a typical Monday for me: I wake up at 7 a.m, get ready, and sit down with a cup of coffee and a small breakfast before I head out the door at 8:30 and start my classes. When it comes time for lunch, I eat at the same place every day and proceed to get a cup of coffee before my afternoon classes start. I get back to my dorm at 3:15, and start doing homework. I end my day with a cup of tea and hopefully an episode of Netflix before I head to bed. By all means, this is not everything I do in a day because that would be very boring, but it’s the base I structure everything else around.

So why do I have a daily routine? Well I’m here to tell you just that!

Why I Have a Daily Routine (And You Should Too!)

1. It Gives You a Sense of Control

You know when I said earlier that I wouldn’t consider myself a control freak? Well, I kind of lied. I do like to exercise a certain amount of control during my day. Having a daily or weekly routine allows you to know exactly when things will happen. It helps you to set your agenda to fit in everything else you need to do.

For example, if Tuesday is your laundry day and you also have some errands to run, then you know you have to wake up slightly earlier in order to get everything done.

2. It Boosts Productivity

Having a daily routine not only gives you a sense of control, but it also boosts your productivity! When you know exactly what you have to do every day, you can devote more time to figuring out what else needs to get done.

For example, if you know you have three hours between your classes, you can head to the library and start on some homework. That way you have less to worry about later at night when all you want to do is relax!

3. It Helps You to Grow and Improve

As we all know, the main point of having a daily routine is to do the same thing (or set of things) on a regular basis. Chances are if you do something every day, you’ll eventually become an expert at it! You’ll figure out the methods that work for you and the one’s that don’t, and you’ll adapt from there.

For example, if you make the same breakfast every day, then it’ll only take a little bit for you to become the master chef of that breakfast food, and who doesn’t want to be a master chef?

  1. I agree with having a daily routine! It’s helps you to be more productive than not having a routine. I’ve noticed over a span of a few months I’ve been able to add to my routine little by little. I don’t spend any more time than I had before, but with routine, it seems I’ve increased my speed with my daily activities naturally! I also have a hard time with something interrupting my schedule. I find if I take a minute or two to reevaluate my schedule, I can get back on track quicker than not reevaluating. For me, this elevates a lot of stress and anxiety.
