Crop tops: love ’em or hate ’em, they’re practically everywhere. Thank goodness they’re not at their peak anymore (I definitely do not miss 2014), but about 20% of the time you think you find a cute shirt, it’ll be cropped. I don’t know if the fashion world is punishing me for liking pasta too much or if there’s some fabric shortage I don’t know about, but it’s kind of irritating.
Look, I appreciate the concept of the crop top. It’s fun, great for music festivals, perfect for a hot day, or when you just want to show off your
dad bod six pack abs. The only problem is that it’s not the most seasonally versatile garment in the world, especially if you live in a state with extreme seasons (represent, Iowa!). Before you click away, though, let me tell you that it IS in fact possible to style a crop top when the temperature dips below 70!
“Really?” you ask.
Opt for a darker color
Sorry not sorry, but you should really put that floral print crop in storage for the season. We’re already pushing it a bit by showing our midriff during the fall, we don’t want to go over the edge!
Try going for a classic black, earthy tones, or darker chambray!
Pair it with long pants or a midi skirt
Y’all, we’re not trying to freeze out here. We need to cover more of our lower half to balance out our upper half! As per usual with crop tops, try going for something high waisted. I’m a huge fan of these pants (similar here) because they’re made of linen and super comfy! Plus they kind of make me feel like I have my life together, which is always a plus.
Layer, layer, layer!
Like I mentioned earlier, we gotta add more coverage to the look! If you’re looking for more of a street style vibe, I would go for a bomber or denim jacket. If you wanted to be a bit ~edgier~, try a motorcycle jacket! Anything that says “yeah, I’m wearing a crop top and I’m totally OWNING it!” is acceptable!
Bomber Jacket BP // Crop Top Monki // Pants Gap Factory // Mules Topshop
Choker via Von Maur // Sunglasses Target
I always end with this, but you just gotta own it, homies! As I mentioned earlier in the week, it’s totally worth it to break fashion rules as long as you can commit to it!
