Monthly Musings: May

I know I usually say that the months go by so fast, but I think May is an exception to the rule. A lot of great stuff has happened this month, but dang, I feel like it dragged by. Like if I woke up 3 years from now and someone told me it was still May of 2017, I wouldn’t be that surprised.

Dudes, so much has happened since my last monthly recap, so excuse me if this is the longest one yet! Starting from the beginning of the month, I finished my junior year of college! Now that I only have one semester left of school, the reality of adulthood is starting to sink in! I started looking for possible job opportunities and was very discouraged by the amount of “entry level” positions asking for 1-2 years of experience. It kind of feels like back when I was 16 and looking for my first job. How can I get experience if I need experience for said experience?

After spending a week at home, I made the move to Chicagoland, USA for my summer internship. I’m not in the city, but I am in a suburb, and I’m pretty sure I like Illinois more than Iowa! I’m also loving the 9-5 life of the adult world. Call me a #Grandma, but it suits me a lot better than the college life.

As far as exploring the area goes, I actually went into the city yesterday! The highlight was definitely going to see the houses from Shameless! Even though the neighborhood was pretty sketchy, it was so cool to be able to take photos in front of the Gallagher house and Kev & V’s place! We also went a couple blocks down to see Sheila’s house. If you’re a fan of Shameless, I would definitely suggest going to see them! One thing to note, though: use the buddy system because it’s definitely not the safest place in the world.

While in Chicago, we also went to Millennium Park, walked down Michigan Avenue, and went to the John Hancock building to experience the Tilt. Overall a pretty good day! If anyone else has been to Chicago a lot/lives there, let me know what your favorite places to go are! I would love to experience more of the city!

I finally finished The Widow! I know it took me approximately 5 years to read it, but it honestly is a good book!

I just started The Cutaway by Christina Kovac, and so far so good! According to the synopsis on the book, it’s about a news producer getting caught up in a story that came across her desk, and she accidentally puts herself right in the middle of the investigation. I have high hopes for this book!

Of course, Harry Styles’ new album is absolute perfection. It’s just called Harry Styles, and every song on there sounds like it was sung by an angel. Maybe I’m a bit biased from my previous 1D obsession, but you need to listen to it if you haven’t already!

Also, we can’t talk about Harry without mentioning Niall! His new single, Slow Hands, is fabulous! Much love for Niall!

Lana Del Rey released a new song called Coachella – Woodstock in My Mind, and again, it’s perfection! Can’t wait for her album to come out!

I’m on the last episodes of Shameless, and I can’t wait for the new stuff to come out in the fall!

I recently rediscovered Russell Howard, and I’ve been watching a lot of his stand up on YouTube. I’m a huge fan of British humor, so I think it’s hysterical, but I can see where he might not be for everyone.

The Harry Style’s episode of James Corden’s Carpool Karaoke is a true blessing. Again, biased, but quite possibly the best episode of Carpool Karaoke yet!

Finally, I’m still a huge fan of Buzzfeed Video, and they just released a video that made me laugh until I cried. 10/10 highly recommend!

  1. Chicago has so much to see and do! Looks like you had the best time!

    1. I did have a great time!

  2. Harry Style’s new album is soooo good!!

    xx, Melissa

  3. Love Chicago! Don’t get discouraged by your job search. It takes longer than everyone thinks it will so it’s great you’re already thinking about it. I’m also so thankful that Harry blessed us on the Late Late Show last week!

    1. Haha it really was a blessing!

  4. May what that was a month! It feels like yesterday was april! My month was busy but also really awesome!

    1. That’s great!

  5. May felt slow to me as well! Maybe it’s because I graduated from college this month. I’ve always wanted to visit Chicago! I hope you have a great summer there!

    1. Congrats on graduating!

  6. Hey… being a #Grandma is the good life! I always love going to bed at 9pm every damn night and I love it! Always ready to conquer the next day ahead. Enjoy adulting!!! xx

    1. Haha thanks Kait!

  7. How fun to be able to call Illinois home for the summer. I visited Chicago for a few days a couple years ago, and I loved it. I just started watching Shameless, and I hear that it’s hilarious, so I need to get back on that. I’ve only watched the pilot episode, and it was so crazy! I love Carpool Karaoke! I need to watch Harry Style’s episode.

    1. You def need to watch Shameless and the Carpool Karaoke episode!

  8. Lana Del Ray’s song with The Weekend – Lust for life, is also an amazing song!!

    1. Omg yes love that too!

  9. Definitely sounds like you had a busy month! And I totally get the job hunting thing! So frustrating! It’s actually why I refuse to get my PhD right away. So in short, my master’s program should give me the qualification to get hired somewhere, but no one will hire me without a fancy certification or a PhD, and I can’t get the certification without experience. So I’m forced to go back to school to get my PhD even though these jobs are all “entry level”. What entry level job requires you to have a PhD?!? Hopefully you have better luck than me haha!

    1. Omg can’t believe you can’t get an entry level in your field without a PhD! Crazy!

  10. I like the One Direction guys’ solo work much better than 1D stuff so far! And exploring Chicago sounds like a total blast!

  11. Your move is so exciting! The internship will definitely help you out when it comes time to job hunt. I also recommend taking on a part-time job during your last semester– say an office job or something related to your career goals. If you’re applying for assistant or entry-level positions, that type of experience will help out (depending on what you want to do) a lot! Good luck!

    1. Thanks Amanda!

  12. That bomber jacket is so cute! My May was weird…here’s to a great June!

  13. OMG THE HARRY STYLES ALBUM! Okay sorry I’m just super excited about it too, haha! But yes also loving Niall’s new songs as well! I think both of them will have great careers! Excited to see more about your adventures in Chicago!
