How To Wear Midi Dresses When You’re Short

How To Wear A Midi Dress When You're Short | An OOTD only on Five Foot and Fabulous!

This isn’t a secret, but fashion isn’t really made for people under 5’6″. Sleeves are always too long, we tend to trip on hemlines, and ankle pants are actually full length on us. And contrary to popular belief, we’re not all that better at walking in heels (at least I’m not anyway!). Another trend that doesn’t typically work out for petite gals: midi dresses.

What’s meant to fall a couple inches below the knee actually ends up falling a couple inches above the ankle. If styled incorrectly, it can look like I’m a 10 year old trying on my mom’s clothes. Since I’d rather look like my 21-year-old self, I wanted to find a way to wear this trend that won’t make me look juvenile. And friends, I think I figured it out!

Wear heels, not flats

Heels can make your legs look miles longer, and I think that’s a certain kind of magic everyone can appreciate. The best kind of heel to wear to make your legs look longer is a stiletto without an ankle strap, but whatever choice you make will have some sort of positive effect.

Pick something with shape

Petite frames get lost very easily under a lot of fabric. If you’re a shortie like me, you’ll want to make sure that you wear midi dresses that have some more shape. Personally, I like fitted bodices and flowing skirts because the bodice helps balance everything out.

Own it!

Last, but certainly not least, work it! With confidence, you can wear anything you want to wear! Don’t let what the magazines say stop you!

  8. I am going to share this with my mom she always has some troubles being short

    1. Haha okay thanks Sydney!

  9. I have the complete opposite problem haha. It’s actually easier for me to get midi skirts and hem them up just a few inches to get to regular length – the regular length ones are so short now days! But these are great tips to style one that is just barely too long, especially if you’re a bit shorter, so you don’t have to constantly have to hem them!

    1. I wish I had your problem, haha! The minis are too short on me too!

  10. The only midi dress I own is this green 50s style dress I got from Amazon. I expected it to be a silky material but it’s actually a fairly stiff cotton and it’s amazing both for the fact that I’m relatively short (5’4″) and a little bit curvy. It’s fitted at the top and has almost a full circle skirt. It actually only hits a couple of inches below my knees, and I wear it with a crinoline to make it actually poof out (but even without it it just looks so nice!) I’m not usually one for vintage, but the style is just so perfect for my body!

    1. It sounds like a beautiful dress! I would love to own a vintage piece like that!
