What do the following clothing items have in common: maxi dresses, wide leg pants, and anything baggy?
Answer: They all have vendettas against petite people.
Okay, so that’s a bit of an exaggeration. No garment can really have a vendetta against a body type, but they can definitely be a bit difficult to deal with. It’s especially difficult when the fashion industry tells certain body types what they should and shouldn’t wear.
I wouldn’t have such a big problem with this if the “extended sizes” departments were actually stocked with the same merchandise as the “standard size” department. Have y’all ever walked around a petite section? At most department stores, it seems like you just walked straight into your grandmother’s closet. I know other departments outside the “norm” share similar attributes, and that’s just not cool.
Because I would rather *not* look like I play BINGO on Tuesday nights with my pals Dolores and Edna (although to be honest, we do wear the same sweaters), I work with what I can find in standard sizes. You know what I’ve learned throughout my experiences? It is TOTALLY possible for a petite lady to wear all the trends that the tall folk have been wearing.
Trust me, I’m a fashion major.
Midi / Maxi Skirts
There’s an argument for each of these lengths, but I decided to include them together because they’re so similar.
“Experts” say that midi length garments make your legs look shorter. I, an Expert-In-Training™, say “forget that!” From my experience, someone under 5’4 can wear a midi length garment with heeled shoes. They don’t have to be mile high, either! A simple pair of block heels can make your look complete!
As far as maxi skirts go, that’s more of an annoyance than a *rule*. It’s a rarity to find one that we won’t trip over, but honestly it’s just a quick hem away from a perfect fit! Holla!
Personally, I haven’t ventured into the culotte trend since it gained popularity last year. I think it’s because I still have the memories of unfortunate gaucho pants emblazoned in my mind, but we’re not here to talk about bad 6th grade fashion. That’s a conversation for another day.
To be real, culottes are cool AF. My bestie, Camila, just so happens to be the rad blogger behind My Vogue Style and she rocks culottes like no other! Like seriously, she’s my height and she owns this look! #StyleGoals
Y’all know I wear boyfriend jeans religiously. They’re comfortable, I love the distressed look, and there’s no weird bunching like there is with skinny jeans! The fashion industry tells short girls to go for the skinny fit because it makes us appear more linear, and thus, taller. I’m telling short girls to wear whatever kind of jean they want because happiness is better than appearing linear.
The argument against t-shirt dresses is just plain silly. Fashion “experts” say that their lack of shape makes people look even shorter than they already are. I say, “let us be comfortable!”
Short gals can totally rock a t-shirt dress! I direct your attention once again to Camila. She looks like a rockstar/Kardashian hybrid with this distressed t-shirt dress!
Trench coats: Perfect for rainy days, brisk fall weather, or if you want to be ultra mysterious.
Trench coats: Also perfect for petite gals. We get extra weather protection and we look more mysterious than a tall person while we do it.
While I wouldn’t quite suggest the 5-toddlers-with-a-fedora look, I do highly suggest styling a trench this fall, no matter what your height is!

Last, but certainly not least, are oversized sweaters. I refer back to my earlier comment about wearing the same sweaters as my pals Dolores and Edna. Oversized sweaters are my favorite thing in the world because they’re toasty, comfortable, and totally cute!
Again, the argument against oversized sweaters is that they could swallow a petite person whole. I counter this argument with two points:
- During the winter, I get very cold, and being swallowed by a sweater is a great solution.
- Literally everyone gets swallowed by winter gear, not just short people. Add on a coat, scarf, hat, and gloves, and we’re all marshmallow people.
Camila is once again rocking the oversized sweater in this look. She makes this cardigan look so chic!
