All In Due Time

How many of you are guilty of comparing yourself to others? Everyone should be raising their hand or nodding or some other form of acknowledgement because we all do it. We all overthink, and we all wish we had something someone else had. It’s a fact of life whether we like it or not.

I’m noticing myself comparing myself to others more and more this year. Why? Sometimes I feel like I’m falling behind my peers. I’m supposed to find an internship in the apparel industry for the summer, but it’s a lot harder than you think it might be. At least once a week, I see someone in my major post something to Facebook about an internship they accepted. Meanwhile, I’m sitting at my laptop with an inbox filled with brand promotions and emails from professors. Not a single internship offer to be found. There are many words I could use to describe this feeling, but let’s just say I’m in a funk. I’m going through a three-quarter-college crisis.

I often find myself wishing I applied to the companies I said I would never work for, because at least it would be experience. But now their applications are closed, and I admit that I’m riding the struggle bus out here. Too much longer and I’ll be the driver! Don’t believe me? I’ve been sleeping with my resume under my pillow for 2 weeks in hopes that an internship fairy will come and give me a job offer. Yeah, I’ve gone that far. Also, if you know of an internship fairy, please send her my way.

I know that I will find one someday (if only for the fact that I can’t graduate without one), but I need to stop comparing myself to other people in my major. They were meant to get those internships, and I am meant to get mine. That doesn’t make them any better than me, or vice versa. Hell, I’m sure I’ve achieved something they’ve wanted to do somewhere down the line. The point is, we’re all human. We all go through things at different times.

If you find yourself in a position where you feel like you’re falling behind, don’t let it get you down. Positivity is the only way to get through these struggles. Put on your fighting face and get to work. Pray to god, the universe, or whoever/whatever you believe in. Put on a girl power playlist. Be you, because that’s the best you that you can be.

You rock, girlfriend, and don’t you ever forget it. You will get whatever you’re looking for all in due time. I promise.

  11. They say comparison is the thief of joy. Just keep doing your best! We all go through life at our own pace and sometimes things don’t work out because there’s something better in the cards. You’ll wind up just where you need to be! 🙂 And know that you’re not alone in this! I went through the same thing when I was searching for internships back in the day.

  12. I LOVE this post. As someone hoping to be in the medical field, the pressure is definitely on to compete with your peers and be better than them. But it’s so difficult to do so and it can really hurt you in the end. I’m trying hard to stop comparing myself to people, but it’s a very difficult thing to do.

I just love how honest this post is and it’s such a wonderful reminder that positivity can sometimes be the only way to go through life.

  14. It can be such a difficult thing to have faith that things will sort themselves out when the time is right but it is so true. I am a firm believer that everything happens for a reason and at specific times.
