Let’s be real: we all have those days where nothing goes quite right. You might sleep through your alarm clock, your roommate could be annoying you beyond all measure, the coffee pot at work could be broken when you’re suffering from caffeine withdrawal…the point is, sometimes days can just suck. All you want is for something, anything to go your way for once. Sometimes our day ends on a bad note still, but other times a friend may come through and turn your day around!

We should all be that friend. We should all be the person who makes an effort to help other people have good days. The thing is, it’s not too hard to be that person. There are a ton of simple ways to show your friends or family that you care about them and their wellbeing.

If you’re having trouble thinking of something right away, I’m here to get you on the right path!

1. Buy someone coffee

Or tea, or hot chocolate, or any other of their favorite beverages! The great thing about this is that’s inexpensive & you don’t even have to know the person you’re buying for. Seriously, you could just pay it forward in the Starbucks line and give the person behind you a nice surprise!

If you’re close with the person you’re getting coffee for, try to remember how they take it or what their favorite specialty drink is. They’ll definitely appreciate that you remembered 2 sugars or the extra shot of espresso in their caramel macchiato!

2. Make them one of their favorite foods

For my last birthday, my best friend made me pancakes for breakfast because she knew I loved them. It wasn’t a huge gesture, but it started my birthday off on the right foot!

You certainly don’t have to make your friend a 5 course meal with an appetizer and dessert, even just a simple bowl of cookies would suffice.

3. Find a way to make them laugh

Laughter is the best medicine, as they say! Everyone has their own sense of humor, so try to cater towards that. I’m a huge fan of those funny Buzzfeed listicles or a hilarious YouTube video, but other people might prefer a standup routine on Netflix or a good joke. Whatever the case, try to get a smile on their face!

4. Treat them to their favorite activity

Sometimes the only thing you need to make your day better is to do your favorite activity. This could be a whole myriad of things based on personal preference, price, geographical location, but here are a few ideas to get you started!

  1. Shopping
  2. Going to the movies
  3. Hiking
  4. Going to the gym
  5. Hitting a fair/amusement park

5. Let them know you appreciate them

Last, but certainly not least, let your friend or family know how much they mean to you. You can tell them in person, shoot them a text if you won’t see them that day, or give them a sentimental card!

Central 23 is a producer of quirky cards for all occasions, and you’ve probably seen their fun designs in Urban Outfitters or Topshop! They have a ton of cards that are solely “just because,” making them a perfect way to express your appreciation or admiration of a friend or family member.

If you don’t already know, I’m a fashion major at university, and I always appreciate it when someone compliments my style. I’m also a huge fan of One Direction (like kinda scary tbh), so when I saw this card, I resembled the heart eyes emoji. Luckily, I know someone who will also appreciate it, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want to keep it for myself.

Other great cards by Central 23 include the following: 1, 2, 3, 4

Someone bought me a coffee once when I was sitting at Starbucks sobbing (long story). It was an older woman who sat with me and talked me through it. The kindness of strangers was like a life raft and I’ve never forgotten it.
